Starday 6th of Hespar the First Month of Summer.
On a bright and warm morning the companions strike out for the Ruins of St. Ulther’s tower. On their last visit to the ruined manor house they left some loose ends and unchecked corners (or doors to be exact). Additionally they were informed by Marco Rasholt, whom Iblis has paid to keep an eye on the place that several other factions seem to hold the place in interest. The first group was the evil cultists known only as the Harvesters who the band had routed from these parts several weeks ago. The second group was a gaggle of child sized people who wore ratty clothing and spoke in a maniacal high-pitched tongue that was unknown to the watcher. The two groups fought at the cellar entrance with the cultists loosing the fight and retreating but not before they exhumed a walking corpse from a fresh grave.
Additionally Rosalio Delgado, the “well-connected” man from Sanctuary, let it be known that he had contacts that were interested in an artifact that may be resting in the ruins of the manor’s cellar. The Ulther Bastion Key. A device used to access and control the St. Ulther Bastion Stone on the edge of the Chaos Wastes. This stone and the six others like it ring the Chaos Wastes and have managed to stifle the spreading Chaos Taint by tenfold. The Chaos Waste is still expanding but at a fraction of its pace prior to the advent of the Bastion Stones. The party agreed that finding the Bastion Key would be important and that they would at least entertain the idea of selling the key.
So off they went cutting across the now deceased Farmer Yan’s farm and other fallow fields and into the wooded hills that ring this fertile valley. With little trouble and under the guidance of the Nemmadian Ranger Iron Fist they linked up with several hunting trails and eventually made it to the bare hilltop where resides the last remaining bits of St. Ulthers Manor.
They made their way to the ruined turret wherein the trap-door to the cellar rested, only to find that the floor of the turret had crumbled and fallen down into the cellar itself leaving a fifteen foot wide jagged opening and large piles of debris below. This must have been the work of that late spring storm last week.
The heroes anchored a rope around the trunk of a nearby maple tree and then Rosalio Delgado descended onto the rocky and uneven footing below. From down here in the shadows it was clear that the ceiling above was not stable, in fact parts of one of the lower walls had buckled spilling soft earth and stone in. Rosalio was not able to contemplate this for long before a horrible skittering sound caught his attention, moments later a horrible insect crawled over the debris and into his torchlight. A massively large monstrous centipede with slathering mandibles and razor sharp appendages. The armor like chitinous carapace was a mottled deep purble and black while the underbelly was a maroon red, the creatures devilish eyes were steel colored and inhuman.
Rosalio readied himself for the beast but was immediately struck by the creatures vicious mandibles and a burning in his arms indicated that the creature was venomous. From above his companions tossed stones down and scurried about, some grasped the rope and began to descend into the treacherous and infested stones. The creature moved back and forth into the shadows below before striking out again and again before being struck down by the combined efforts of the parties big hitters. Though it was evident that it’s effects would linger on. Despite his mastery in the Denul Warren Iblis An-Urg was unable to treat the centipedes venom that now coursed through all of Rosalio’s body leaving him feeling sick and fatigued.
After a short moment of respite the group formed up and descended the long curved stone stair into the “cellar’s” cellar. They had but moments to see that the first room was not in the state they left it before a swarm of monstrously large rats attacked them.
Their red beady eyes had an eerie red glow and their bodies were often malformed and mutated. The casters Iblis and Kong-Ru began to sense a vile aroma when they opened their warrens, a contamination that could only be the twisted Chaos Warren. Their suspicions were confirmed when a horrendously malformed creature staggered out of the southern hall assaulting the Hero’s front line. It slammed the Youthful Nemmadian Barbarian Ullyff Blackmane and in the same motion wrapped his torso up tight in the grip of its multiple strong tentacles and begun to drag him close it’s probing mouth tentacle waved back and forth in anticipation. But before the chaos mutant could slip the wriggling member into the mouth of the handsome Nemmadian Ulyff was able to break free. Behind the front line the Iblis found his attempts to access his healing warren thwarted by the strength and proximity of the chaos taint that seemed to radiate from the beast. Several sickening blows later the concerted efforts of the weakened fighter, recovered Barbarian and the nervous ranger broght the foul thing down where it quickly and without fanfare dissolved into a pile of unrecognizable viscera.
